This Desk is Just the Right Size

We love this KidKraft kids desk.

Looking for a child’s desk that is bigger than a toddler table but not quite so grand as the children’s desks found at furniture stores (usually made for the over six crowd)? Look no further than the KidKraft Pinboard desk with chair.

My mom found it at Costco last year and we love it! Since then I’ve also seen it at and Amazon. Priced at about $175, it is a good quality (and sturdy!)  wood product that is made to last. As I recall, it was fairly easy to assemble. Dimensions are 31.2 x 19 x 43.5 inches, sized just right to stick in a corner of our living room where Rocky can do some writing/coloring and still be close by. It also blends with our furniture and is not conspicuous when he isn’t using it.

The desk has a drawer underneath which is great for storing pencils, crayons, stickers, etc. and a little shelf at the top. The pinboard backing is meant for little ones to display their drawings but I wasn’t quite ready to trust my child with pushpins! Ever stepped on a tack? It hurts! We simply use tape instead. We use the shelf to place knick knacks like pencil sharpeners, small picture frames and favorite special occasion cards.

The KidKraft Avalon desk is a nice alternative if you want a different color.

The color is espresso, or dark brown, which fits in nicely with our furniture. If this color won’t work for you, KidKraft has a similar product in white and honey colors. This version has a hutch instead of the pinboard but is equally attractive.

I have been pleasantly surprised that the desk has held up to the use and abuse of my 4-year-old. So far I’ve been able to scrub off everything from pencil to glitter glue and the wood still looks nice. There are a couple of small chips in the paint but nothing abnormal other than the places in the chair where Rocky decided to do a little carving with child safety scissors. Oops! Here I thought he was over that phase and could handle them unsupervised. Guess I was wrong!

If you are in the market for a desk, hope this helps! KidKraft also makes nice toy boxes, table and chair sets, and other cute furniture and decor for children. Check them out at
